Luxora: two weeks with the sky-city RPG

August 26, 2026 · Markus Lindqvist

I didn't expect much from Luxora when I installed it. Another fantasy RPG, another floating city — the setup reads like a hundred others. Then I hit the first real story beat and realised the writing had actually earned my attention.

The core loop is rebuilding the fallen city of Luxora, one district at a time. Each unlocked area brings a new character to your party and a new slice of the backstory. It's structured so you always have a clear next goal without ever feeling nagged about it. I liked that the game trusted me to explore.

Combat deserves a mention. It's turn-based, three characters at a time, with elemental skills that combo off each other. Cooldowns are shown plainly, so you can plan two turns ahead instead of guessing. My one tip: don't ignore the support character early on — a well-timed shield saved me from more than one wipe.

The thing I keep telling people, though, is that all of this works offline. I played long stretches of it on trains and flights with the connection off and never hit a paywall or a 'reconnect' screen. For a story-driven RPG, that's rarer than it should be.

If you want a game that fills the gaps in a commute without demanding a signal, Luxora is an easy recommendation. Just budget your evenings carefully — it has a way of eating them.
