Great offline games that run on old phones

Great offline games that run on old phones

We test on a drawer of aging phones on purpose, because not everyone upgrades every year and plenty of great games run fine on modest hardware. The catch is knowing which ones.

2D games with clean art tend to age best. Titles like Paper Lantern Road barely tax a processor and still look lovely, while sprite-based RPGs run smoothly even on phones a few generations old.

Racing and physics games are the ones to watch. Gearfall Derby was fine on our older test units, but some flashier racers stutter the moment things get busy on screen. When in doubt, check whether there's a graphics setting to turn down.

Storage matters as much as speed. Offline games have to keep all their content on the device, so a huge open-world title can eat gigabytes. The games on this list stay reasonable, which is part of why we recommend them.

If your phone is a couple of years old, don't assume you're locked out. Most of what we cover here was chosen precisely because it doesn't demand the latest silicon.
